The Orinoco is the largest river in Venezuela and the eighth largest river in the world. Its source is in the highlands of Guiana near the Brazilian border, and it runs 1,330 miles before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean.
The river's flow varies significantly throughout the year. It normally reaches its high mark in August, and its levels can drop many feet in March and April. When at its lowest, large areas of the river experience high and low tides. Most of the river is navigable by boat. Ocean ships can even travel as far as Ciudad Bolivar, around 270 miles upstream.
