What is Larmor frequency?

The Larmor frequency describes the tendency of a magnetically charged electron to align with a magnetic field in which it is placed. The field exerts a torque on the charged electron as it pulls it into rotation. The measurement of this torque has a number of uses in advanced physics.

Calculating nuclear magnetic resonance and electron paramagnetic resonance both rely on the Larmor frequency. These techniques are methods of measuring unstable materials by placing them within a magnetic field. The Larmor frequency is also important in the study of cosmic dust, the size and frequency of which is determined by how it aligns.
