Laser eye surgery is not associated with much pain. Numbing eye drops are administered during the procedure to limit pain. Discomfort from the surgery can last for 24 to 48 hours after the procedure, according to WebMD.
"LASIK" stands for "laser in-situ keratomileusis" and is a laser surgery performed to correct eyesight by reshaping the cornea. The cornea is the clear covering on the front of the eye. The procedure can be used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Local anesthesia is delivered in the form of numbing eye drops, but patients can also request mild sedation. The procedure takes about 10 minutes, and vision is corrected by the next day.
