Cataract surgery is not especially painful, particularly if performed by laser, according to the Larson Eye Center. Itching and mild discomfort are common for a couple days after surgery, reports Mayo Clinic, but vision begins to improve within several days.
Doctors typically prescribe eye drops after these procedures to minimize eye redness, inflammation and pressure, according to Mayo Clinic. A person who experiences significant pain after this surgery despite using over-the-counter pain medication needs to contact his physician immediately. Other symptoms that signal cause for concern include eye redness, vision loss, flashing lights or floaters in front of the eye, and nausea or vomiting.
