Laser treatments can fade sunspots, also known as solar lentiginosis or age spots, by destroying pigment-producing melanocytes in the skin. Patients typically require several treatment sessions over several weeks or months, notes Mayo Clinic.
Sunspots are benign brown spots formed by excess melanin pigment in the epidermis, or surface layer of the skin, according to Healthline. To fade sunspots by destroying the melanin-producing cells in the skin, the department of dermatology at Oregon Health & Science University supports the use of lasers including several types of Q-switched yttrium-aluminum-garnet, or YAG, and ruby lasers as well as the Lux1540 fractional laser.
