Although quarters were never made entirely of silver, the U.S. Mint completely stopped using silver in quarters in 1965, producing the last actual silver quarters in 1964. Prior to 1965, the Mint made quarters out of 10 percent copper and 90 percent silver.
Quarters minted between 1932 and 1964 contain 0.18 troy ounces of silver. After 1964, the U.S. Mint used a 75 percent copper and 25 percent nickel alloy in quarters because of fears about the declining stock of silver. The U.S. Mint created silver quarters at its facilities in Philadelphia, San Francisco and Denver. The Mint continued to make silver proof coins for collectors after 1964.
