As of March 2015, the last safety inspection conducted for the Walt Whitman bridge was in June 2014. During this inspection, the Delaware River Port Authority found damage to several of the bridge's gusset plates with 15 needing immediate replacement. The Walt Whitman Bridge crosses the Delaware River and connects Philadelphia, Pa., to Gloucester, N.J.
The Walt Whitman Bridge is a green-colored suspension bridge which opened on May 16, 1957. It was named for the poet Walt Whitman, who spent his last years in Camden, N.J. The bridge is 11,981-feet long and is part of Interstate 76. It carries 7 lanes of traffic and a $5 toll is charged to drivers going west, as of 2015.
