When was the last update on the Jarkov mammoth?

The Jarkov mammoth, frozen solid in Siberian permafrost, was found in 1997 and removed to an ice cave for thawing and study. Scientists hoped the specimen would yield living cells for cloning experiments. As of Aug. 2014, cells and DNA recovered from the specimen have not proven suitable for cloning.

As of 2014, many scientists do not believe DNA of high enough quality will be retrieved from frozen specimens because of the degrading effect of freeze-thaw cycles. Others believe there is a strong probability that eventually one frozen carcass may produce living cells and DNA suitable for cloning.

Mammoth,” exciting viewers at the possibility that scientists might clone a woolly mammoth.
