What are lawn moles?

Moles are furry animals with exaggerated front feet and lengthy claws that tunnel through soil, states the University of Missouri. They burrow through soil in lawns, forests and meadows. Moles are ravenous eaters with a diet of insects, grubs and worms.
As moles push soil out of their tunnels, they leave behind molehills, which are piles of excavated soil, notes the University of Missouri. Because their activity often makes lawn care more troublesome, burrowing moles are commonly considered nuisance pests. They are also known to unsettle plants while tunneling. However, their consumption of insects and other underground animals benefits plants.
