LDS is an acronym that stands for Latter-day Saints and is a shortened form that refers to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Members of the LDS church are also referred to as Mormons or a Latter-day Saints.
The LDS church was founded by Joseph Smith after he claimed to have been visited by an angel named Moroni in 1823. Smith claimed that the beliefs of the church were based on a holy text that had been engraved on gold plates during the fourth century AD. One of the LDS church's holy books, the Book of Mormon, was first published in 1830 and is based on Smith's dictated translations of the gold plates.
