What is leaky gut syndrome?

Leaky gut syndrome is a mysterious condition affecting the stomach and intestines, according to WebMD. Symptoms include gas, bloating, food sensitivity, cramps, aches and pains. As of 2014, doctors know little about the condition and have a difficult time making a diagnosis.

Leaky gut syndrome may be caused by intestinal hyperpermeability, in which substances pass through the lining of the small intestines and enter the bloodstream. This occurs in Crohn's disease and celiac disease, but it is unclear as to whether these diseases cause the hyperpermeability or they occur as a result of hyperpermeability of the intestines, according to WebMD. Leaky gut syndrome is treated by making lifestyle and diet changes.
