Do learning drivers need to be insured?

According to Allstate, learning drivers with a learner's permit need to be insured. Teenagers learning to drive are eligible for insurance coverage under their parent's policy.
A learner's permit gives a driver permission to operate a motor vehicle with restrictions. Before allowing the driver on the road, the vehicle owner needs to contact his insurance company. Some providers deem a learner's permit insufficient to gain auto insurance coverage. Others require an increase in the premium because an inexperienced driver greatly increases the risk the insurer assumes. Failing to contact the insurance company places the policyholder at risk for financial loss.
