"The Legacy" by Virginia Woolf is about a man named Gilbert finding out his recently deceased had wife killed herself because she fell in love with someone else after Gilbert had neglected their relationship. The story was commissioned in 1940.
The details of Gilbert and Angela's marriage and her affair are revealed as he reads her diaries after she has died. Although she was no longer happy in their marriage because he began to focus more on his political career than her, she remained faithful to him and refused to divorce him because of his job. In the end, she and her lover kill themselves to escape the situation.
