Lewy body disease, also known as dementia with Lewy bodies, is one of the most common causes of dementia, according to the National Institutes of Health. It occurs when abnormal structures called Lewy bodies accumulate in the brain.
Individuals affected by Lewy body disease may experience hallucinations, movement difficulties, muscle stiffness and cognitive problems, such as confusion, memory loss and changes in alertness and attention, states the National Institutes of Health. Lewy body disease usually strikes individuals between the ages of 50 and 85. It worsens over time, and scientists have yet to find a cure; however, there are medications that help alleviate the symptoms.
