Midland Mutual Life Insurance of Columbus, Ohio was purchased by the Swiss Re Company, a prominent competitor within the insurance sector. Midland Mutual was bought out in 2000.
Midland Mutual was authorized to convert from a mutual to stock company by the Ohio Department of Insurance in 1994. However, it was taken over by its competitor six years later. The last Midland Mutual employees left the iconic Midland skyscraper in downtown Columbus by in 2002 due to office consolidation to Indiana and New York. The building was dedicated in 1971 but no longer houses any employees of the company that built it.
