The cover of the final issue of Life magazine, dated Dec. 29, 1972, featured the words "The Year in Pictures 1972" in large white letters on a black background. Several smaller words, all in red, surrounded this headline.
The smaller red words surrounding the headline covered the remainder of the cover page. The words chosen indicate several of the most notable American news items from that year, such as "Godfather," "Peace," "Nixon," "Olympics," "Inflation," "Hurricane Agnes," "Chess," "Kissinger" and "Vasectomy."
While the positioning of these words was random, the word chosen for the lower right-side corner was, simply and poignantly, "Goodbye."
