The first light bulb patent was filed in 1841 by Frederick DeMoleyns. American J. W. Starr patented his design in 1845. By 1880, American Thomas Edison had created his own light bulb using carbonized bamboo as the filament.
The bulbs of DeMolyens and Starr sent electric current through filaments enclosed in vacuum-sealed glass cases. These filaments were not resistant enough to electricity, used too much power and lasted only minutes. Thomas Edison claimed he solved the incandescent problem in 1879, but his concept was flawed. In 1880, Edison and his team concluded that the filament must be more resistant, eventually discovering that carbonized bamboo lasts nearly 600 hours.
