What are lithium ion batteries?

Lithium-ion batteries are rechargeable sources of energy commonly used in cellphones, laptops and power tools. These batteries are made of lithium and carbon, which are highly reactive elements that hold large amounts of energy.
Lithium-ion batteries can sustain numerous charges and discharge cycles throughout their lives. The life expectancy of lithium-ion batteries is approximately two to three years. Lithium-ion batteries do not retain the memory of each charge cycle, which means a complete discharge is not required to recharge back to 100 percent power. Typically, these batteries are contained in a closed pack with either cylindrical or prismatic-shaped battery cells.
