Audrey Kunin, MD, identifies the red bumps found on the arms as keratosis pilaris. It is also known as "chicken skin" or KP and most often affects the upper arms and thighs.
Dr. Kunin describes keratosis pilaris as tiny rough bumps scattered along the upper arms and thighs. The condition is very common, affecting approximately 50 percent of the population. Dr. Kunin asserts that while the condition can be a nuisance, it is medically harmless. Treatment of "chicken skin" focuses on improving the skin's texture. Dr. Kunin suggests treatment with chemical exfoliants including glycolic acid and retinols. The patient must maintain a skin care regimen to keep the condition under control.
