Why do llamas spit?

Llamas spit at other llamas who hold a lower social status and also spit at each other over food or when in a fight. Llamas raised around humans may spit at them if considered part of their herd. They also spit if their weight-carrying capacity is overloaded.

Llamas originated from the plains of North America 40 million years ago and migrated over time to South America. Llamas grow up to 6 feet tall and weigh up to 500 pounds. Llamas live on average 15 to 25 years. Llamas are used in North America for guarding sheep and goats; since llamas are herbivores, the benefits outweigh the costs. A well-trained llama becomes respectful and friendly.
