What is spray foam insulation?

Spray foam insulation is a type of home insulation that is sprayed between rafters and wall joists, as opposed to rolls of fiberglass placed between them. Spray foam is available in two types: open and closed cell.
When installed properly, spray foam insulation may outperform a majority of standard fiberglass insulation. It provides both insulation and air barrier in the home. Closed cell spray foam insulation has a higher R-value and is typically sprayed in 2- or 3-inch thicknesses in order to meet energy code requirements. Open cell foam expands to fill the framing cavity, as opposed to closed cell, which doesn't expand.
