Area code 703 is located in the northeast part of Virginia and includes the cities of Alexandria and Roanoke. Since March 1, 2000, area code 571 has shared the same geographic area as code 703.

Area code 703 was one of the original United States area codes created in 1947 and has been restricted to its current area since 1995. Other cities within the area code include Fairfax, Mount Vernon and Manassas. It covers all or part of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William and Stafford counties.

Since the addition of the 571 area code, most new phone numbers assigned in the area receive the 571 code rather than 703.
