Dry socket typically occurs about two days after a tooth is extracted, WebMD explains. Once a tooth is pulled, a blood cot forms in its place to protect the bone and nerves hidden underneath. Dry socket, also known as alveolar osteitis, occurs if the blood clot dissolves or becomes dislodged.

If the socket gets infected, it can be extremely painful and last for five to six days, according to WebMD. People who smoke, have poor oral hygiene, have wisdom teeth removed, have a history of dry socket, use birth control pills or have a traumatic experience during the tooth removal process are at higher risk of getting dry socket.
