How long does it take for an ankle hairline fracture heal?

Hairline fractures of the ankle, also called stress fractures, take at least six weeks to heal, according to WebMD. If tendon or ligament damage occurs with the fracture, healing can take even longer. It can take up to two years to regain pain-free movement of the joint.
Most people return to normal activity within three to four months after an ankle fracture. During the healing process, the patient must keep the ankle immobilized by wearing a brace or a cast, and avoid putting weight on the injured foot to keep the bones in proper alignment. Physical therapy may be prescribed to aid in the healing process.
