The wait time to approve a Social Security application can be anywhere from three to six weeks to sometimes two to three years, as of March 2015. It could be even longer if the person makes errors or experiences other issues with the application process.

Most people typically wait a few months at most to receive their Social Security application approvals. However, if the person applying makes a mistake or the application otherwise fails the first round, the wait time for reconsideration is substantial. Similar to a circuit court appeals process, the wait time can range from two to three months, after which there may also be a hearing that can take six to 18 months before approval.
