How long does the average person keep a car?

As of August 2013, the average person keeps a car for 11.4 years. Increased quality of vehicles and problems affording another car are some of the reasons that contribute to people keeping their cars for that long.

Many people are keeping their cars for a long time because they are still in good condition. Some experience low maintenance costs, which will contribute to keeping the car longer. With the increasing costs of buying cars, many people prefer keeping their vehicles because they can't meet the cost of a new car. Moreover, most people prefer keeping their cars for more than 10 years after purchase, such as for giving to children to drive when they come of age.
