The time it takes to become an archaeologist varies based on position, according to the Houston Chronicle. Entry-level archaeologists require at least a bachelor's degree, which takes four years, while more advanced work requires more education.
Archaeologists who supervise excavations and field teams or perform government work typically need at least a master's degree, which usually takes two years in addition to a bachelor's degree. A Ph.D., which typically requires two to three years of study beyond a master's degree, is necessary for more prestigious field positions that require substantial expertise. A Ph.D. is also required to teach archaeology at the college level or to work as museum curator.
