How long does it take to become a radiologist?

In the United States, it takes a minimum of 12 years of education and training to become a radiologist. The process starts with an undergraduate degree, followed by four years in medical school. A prospective radiologist then has to complete a four-year residency in radiology.

After the residency is complete, a radiologist then has to become licensed in the state where he lives. The exact requirements to become licensed vary by state. Some radiologists also choose to pursue a fellowship in a specific type of radiology after becoming licensed. This can add an additional one to three years of training.
