Generally, a doctorate of veterinary medicine takes four years to complete beyond the four years of an undergraduate university degree. After earning a DVM, candidates must pass the North American Veterinary Licensing Exam to practice veterinary medicine in the United States.
To gain admission to a U.S. veterinary school, candidates must maintain a 3.5 grade point average during undergraduate studies, score well on the Graduate Record Exam, get letters of recommendations from undergraduate teachers and advisers, and have a generally well-rounded history of student club activities. It is also highly recommended to volunteer at veterinary clinics to gain experience and exposure to the clinical environment.
