It can take anywhere from 11 to 16 years to become a neurosurgeon, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Those interested will need to complete 4 years of college in an applicable degree field, most likely premed, spend 4 years in medical school, complete an internship and spend several years in a neurosurgery residency program.
An internship normally lasts at least 1 year, and a residency program can range anywhere from 5 to 7 years, according to Highland Hospital. Neurosurgeons may also elect to continue on in a fellowship and are required to complete continuing education classes to stay current in their field.
