How long does it take to become a trauma surgeon?

Becoming a trauma surgeon will take at least 11 years, possibly longer. Prospective trauma surgeons must complete an undergraduate degree, followed by the completion of medical school. Each of these programs take four years to complete. A residency follows medical school and often lasts three years.
Some prospective trauma surgeons also complete a clinical clerkship. This requires an additional two years and is done after completing a doctor of medicine program. Fellowships are also available for trauma surgeons after they complete residency, and they generally last for one to two years. However, trauma surgeons can become certified after successfully completing a residency.
