Surgery for trigger thumb typically takes 15 to 30 minutes, according to Orthopedic and Sports Performance Institute. The surgery is either percutaneous, using a needle through the skin to cut the ligament, or open surgery. Both surgeries are outpatient done with local anaesthetic.

Percutaneous surgery doesn't create an open wound and does not require further healing time, claims Orthopedic and Sports Performance Institute. It may not be sufficient for more serious cases of trigger finger. Open surgery involves a small incision to reach the flexor tendons. Any stitches required to close the cut would be removed after 10 to 14 days. Temporary tenderness and some scarring are possible after open surgery.
