The brain can stay swollen up to a month after a stroke, according to Stroke Support. Most stroke patients begin to see an improvement in their symptoms over the first few days and weeks of recovery; however, the time it takes to recover varies from patient to patient.
During the recovery period following a stroke, patients may need to learn new techniques to compensate from the impairments they suffered from as the result of a stroke. Oftentimes, a patient will undergo speech therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy to help them regain their independence. Progress may take time; however, most patients are able to become independent once again.
