Clown fish can live up to 5 years in captivity and up to 10 years in the wild. The reason that clown fish live a shorter time in captivity is that many fish enthusiasts do not put the correct sea anemone in the tank for the clown fish to survive for an extended period.
Clown fish live in symbiosis with sea anemone, meaning that the sea anemone and the clown fish rely on each other for survival. There are thousands of anemones but only a handful that work well with the clown fish. The clown fish lays thousands of eggs at a time and they hatch in less than a week. Clown fish lay their eggs near sea anemones to protect the babies from predators.
