Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR, courses are two to five hours long and the certification lasts for two years, states American Red Cross. CPR is an emergency technique used to attempt to save a person’s life if he has stopped breathing or if his heart has stopped beating, says Mayo Clinic.
Many Americans do not know CPR although people have used it to save lives since 1740, says the America Heart Association. In 1963 The American Heart Association’s CPR team was begun by cardiologist Leonard Scherlis. The first group training took place in 1972, where Leonard Cobb taught CPR. Within two years he assisted in training more than 100,000 people.
