Annette Funicello suffered from multiple sclerosis for 25 years before her death in 2013. Diagnosed in 1987, she was always very open about her battle with the disease.
Funicello first began noticing symptoms of MS while filming her movie "Back to the Beach." Initially, she had trouble walking and balancing. Over the next 25 years, her symptoms progressed until she had to use a cane, a walker and, finally, a wheelchair. Eventually, the illness claimed her ability to speak.
Throughout her battle, she kept a positive attitude and was applauded for her strength in handling adversity. She died in 2013 at the age of 70.
