How long did the Battle of Vicksburg last?

The Battle of Vicksburg was waged for only 47 days, during May and June of 1863, between the Union and Confederate armies of the United States. General Grant's troops besieged the city, trapping Lt. General John Pemberton and his troops inside until July 4, 1863, when Pemberton's forces surrendered.

After initially attacking the city, Grant was dissatisfied with the loss of life and laid siege to Vicksburg in an effort to prevent more death. With the surrender of Vicksburg, the Confederate army was split, and the Mississippi River was under the control of the Union, which historians consider a turning point in the Civil War.
