The Encyclopedia Britannica states that the Berlin airlift lasted for longer than a year, from June 26, 1948, to Sept. 30, 1949. The airlift continued until this date despite the Soviet Union having lifted its blockade on May 12, 1949. The total cost of the airlift was $224 million.
Approximately 2.3 tons of supplies were delivered during the Berlin airlift. Supplies included food, fuel and machinery. The Berlin blockade was a Soviet attempt to compel the United States, United Kingdom and France to abandon their jurisdictions in West Berlin. As a result of the blockade, the United States and Britain started to supply Berlin with supplies by air.
