How long did the French Revolution last?

The French Revolution lasted roughly 10 years, beginning in 1789 and ending in 1799. The revolution came about because of resentment of the privileges of the aristocracy and the taxation policies of the French government on its people, despite years of bad harvests, to help relieve national debt.

The French Revolution ended in 1799 with a coup d’état by Napoleon Bonaparte, as he established himself as France’s first consul. This resulted in the abolition of the French monarchy and the beginning of the Napoleonic Era. France also became a secular and democratic country and experienced a great deal of social change inspired by the Age of Enlightenment.
