The Mayan civilization, one of the most advanced Mesoamerican civilizations, lasted approximately 3000 years. This civilization was established around 2000 B.C., and by 900 A.D., it mysteriously collapsed.
There are several theories as to why Mayan civilization collapsed. There is evidence that overpopulation occurred, so the environment was no longer able to sustain them. There is also evidence of a 200-year drought, which would have affected many Mayan cities in the southern lowlands by reducing the water available. Several other series exist as to why the Mayan civilization collapsed, such as peasant revolts, foreign invasion, epidemic disease and climate change.
