National home health aide certification through the National Association for Home Care and Hospice requires 75 hours of training, observation and documentation of skills demonstrating competency, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The student must also pass a written exam.
If a home health aide works for an agency that receives reimbursement for Medicare or Medicaid, he must get training and pass a competency evaluation or receive state certification, according to the BLS. State certification can be obtained by taking a competency exam without any required training. The median annual salary for home health aides in May 2012 was $20,820.
