How long does it take for an EIN number to be recorded with the IRS?

Individuals or company agents who apply for an EIN, or employer identification number, online have their number immediately recorded with the IRS as soon as the application is completed and verified, as stated by the IRS. The application is available on the IRS website. Once it is submitted, the party receives a confirmation notice that contains the new recorded EIN number.

Entities that apply for an EIN number via fax generally receive a recorded EIN number within 4 business days, while those that apply via mail get the recorded EIN in approximately 4 weeks.

As of May 21, 2012, the IRS only issues one EIN each day. If a company needs to file taxes, but does not have an EIN number due to the IRS restriction, it can submit Form SS-4 with the tax return.
