An endoscopy takes around 20 to 30 minutes to complete, according to Cancer.Net. An endoscopy is a procedure in which a doctor threads a thin, flexible tube that is attached to a camera down the patient's throat to view his upper gastrointestinal tract.
An endoscopy allows a doctor to examine a patient's esophagus, stomach and duodenum, explains Cancer.Net. It is also known as an upper GI endoscopy.
When a patient is scheduled for an upper endoscopy, he must not eat or drink anything for four to eight hours before his procedure. The procedure occurs in a hospital, a GI clinic or an outpatient procedure clinic. During the procedure, the patient receives anesthesia to reduce pain.
