How long do at-fault accidents stay on a driving record?

The California Department of Motor Vehicles notes that points that are assigned to a driver's license for an at-fault accident may stay on the driver's record for three to ten years.

The California DMV notes that the more severe an accident is, the more likely it is to stay on the driver's record longer. For instance, a driver in California who has a minor accident may have the accident removed from the driving record after as little as three years. More severe accidents, such as hit-and-runs, may stay on the driver's record for ten years.
