Grass seeds take anywhere from five to 30 days to germinate and begin growing. The length of time it takes for grass seed to grow depends on what kind of seed it is.
Rye grass is known for having a tremendously short germination time, growing in as little as five days from planting. Bentgrass, Bermuda grass and centipede grass all have average germination times, which are usually around 15 to 20 days. Buffalo grass and bluegrass take almost a full month to germinate and begin growing. Of course, the time it takes to actually see the grass above ground can be longer.
