How long does it take grapes to grow?

According to The Ohio State University Horticulture and Crop Science extension, it takes grapes three years from their first planting to mature enough to bear fruit. Once established, grapes will continue to be productive for 40 years or more.
Grape vines should be planted in early spring for the best results. Fall planting is not recommended because young vines are likely to be lost due to heaving. For grapes on a trellis, plants should be spaced 8 feet apart. For grapes on arbors, plants should be spaced 4 feet apart. An established and well-maintained grape vine will produce up to 40 pounds of grapes per year.
