How long do lions sleep?

A male lion will usually sleep 18 to 20 hours per day. However, after eating a big meal, it is possible for a lion to sleep a full 24 hours. Female lions usually sleep 15 to 18 hours per day.

Female lions sleep fewer hours than males because the female lions are in charge of hunting and caring for cubs. Lions live together in groups called prides, which can be made up of anywhere between two and 20 lions. There is evidence to suggest that females within a pride give birth around the same time, allowing cubs to nurse with several of the females and not just their mother.
