How long do cats sleep?

Cats typically sleep about sixteen hours each day. Only opossums and certain bats snooze longer. A cat's most wakeful times are dusk and dawn. Day and late night are typically feline sleep times.

Cats take several 15 to 30 minute naps daily. Although a cat sometimes falls into a deep sleep, it lasts for only about five minutes. Then, the cat lightly dozes.

When sleeping, cats are often still aware of noises and smells. Cats are able to suddenly wake up from this type of nap and be alert. During periods of deeper sleep, cats take longer to rouse. They blink, yawn and stretch as they awaken slowly.
