How long does an obstetrician go to school?

An obstetrician typically needs at least eight years of college education and four years of residency training to get licensed. The college requirement includes a four-year bachelor's degree along with four years of medical school. Undergraduate degrees vary, but a student typically needs to demonstrate strong academic performance.

In addition to grades, research experience and a satisfactory score on the Medical College Admission Test are required for medical school admission. During medical school, a student normally completes clinical rotations in addition to traditional classroom work. Residency training prepares the graduate for specialty work in obstetrics. Training emphasizes preventative care, obstetrics, gynecology and ultrasonography.
