Two of the most common types of paint are oil-based paint and latex-based paint. According to Glidden, a popular brand of paint, one coat of oil-based paint applied at room temperature takes between six and eight hours to dry to the touch. Glidden also recommends waiting 16 hours before applying a second coat.

Latex paints may dry in an hour or less and can be repainted after about four hours. Try to avoid painting in low temperatures or in rooms that are poorly ventilated, as this increases drying time.
